Training Tomorrow's Army Leaders

On October 13, 2007 the Spanton family commissioned this space to commemorate Colonel Spanton’s life and service to our country. In 1983 Dirk received his Second Lieutenant commission from Illinois State University. During his 26 year career he received numerous awards including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, two Meritorious Service Medals as well as the Combat Action Badge.

Support the Colonel Dirk Spanton Legacy

Colonel Spanton died in 2006 months after returning home from his third deployment to Iraq. Program alumni, friends and supporters of the Department of Military Science are encouraged to make a contribution of $100 or more to engrave a brick to be placed in the walk. Proceeds from the brick walk are used to support the ROTC Program and Cadet sponsored extracurricular clubs.
